" Know the Mahamandal "

The Background : Thought precedes work and often such thought is provoked by objective conditions. Man is a product of the society, which itself is shaped by man himself. Thus society is not lifeless; and anything possessed of life strives for perfection, though throughout the process, imperfection is always met with.It is men that constitute society and any striving for a better and healthy society -must, therefore, be preceded by a molding of the human material.

The dynamism that is needed to make society throb with life is inherent in youth. Thus the future of every country depends upon the strength of character In fact, today the crisis they are facing may be termed as 'Crisis Of Values' - a crisis that has created an idealistic vacuum in their minds characterized by drift and restlessness. and the development of personality of its youth. But all thinking persons today are perturbed by the lack of direction and purpose in the life of the youth of our country.

It is obvious from the condition obtaining that all is not well with the processing of the human material. A closer examination reveals that the only remedy that could be thought of lies in placing before the youth abiding values, which are true to the ancient cultural traditions of the land, on the one hand, and modern enough to inspire them to selfless activity for the uplift of the society, on the other For, without accepting the new, there can hardly be any movement, and for that matter, any progress; while progress itself will have no meaning, if it is divorced from all connection with the past.

These are the objective conditions that have influenced the initiators of this movement into this venture, undeterred by the magnitude of the problem and the insignificance of their resources.

THE IDEA:-

The AKHIL BHARAT VIVEKANANDA YUVA MAHAMANDAL, formed in 1967 thinks that Swami Vivekananda, the patriot-prophet of modern India, provides the youth with ideas and ideals which are most suited for their - blooming into true manhood and can prompt them to dedication and selfless service to the motherland.

Thus, it stands for the welfare of the youth and harnessing their energy to purposeful activity that could mold individual characters. The Mahamandal acts as a coordinating agency with the idea of forging a unity under one ideal, supplying ideas and plans for united action, intensifying and expanding the work of all affiliated associations, and assisting in all possible ways. For, as indicated by Swami Vivekananda,

" the whole secret lies in organization, accumulation of power, co-ordination of wills." A sense of social responsibility resulting in constructive involvement of the youth can only lead to a true national integration and international understanding and banish all ideas of various types of parochialism. The field of the Mahamandal is the whole of India. It respects her heritage and culture, and make no discrimination on grounds of religion, cast, or creed.

AIMS AND OBJECTS :- It cannot be overemphasized that there is an urgent need for infusing a sense of, self-discipline, team work, and above all 'shraddha' in the minds of our youth.

They need to be shown the way to a regulated life that would help in the blossoming of their personalities. This can be brought about only through the culturing of the body, mind and heart in right proportions as a means to- " Man-making and Character- building Education." In the words of Swami Vivekananda, ' purity, patience, and perseverance are the essentials to success and above all LOVE.'

These qualities can be developed only through PRACTICE, which makes a man 'PERFECT'. Thus, ' Character-Building' is possible only if, along with studies of the science and humanities and upkeep of the physique, and a peep into the past for a glimpse of the nation's hoary heritage, the young man engages himself in some work, to be done with a sense of service and without any selfish motive.

'Man-Making'- is never possible only through bookish learning. The youth
should, ' plunge heart, soul and body' into self-less work for the good of others. That is the only way to follow the 'motto' provided by Swamiji in his pointed and forceful expression: " BE AND MAKE. "

Thus the 'object' of the Mahamandal is to propagate abiding values of Indian culture as generally embodied in the character-building and man-making ideals of Swami Vivekananda particularly among the youth, and to harness youthful energy in a disciplined manner for nation-building activities through selfless service to the country, the ultimate aim being to have better human material for a better society.

THE METHOD:- ' Being of one mind is the secret of success.' - For this purpose, it is necessary first to bring together various institutions and individuals working or thinking on the similar lines in (different states) various parts of the country. In fact, work has started in several states.

There are many institutions, organizations, etc.which may find the aims and objects of the Mahamandal acceptable, without loss of their identity, they can become affiliated with the Mahamandal to forge a unity of purpose or in other words to find greater scope for united efforts in fulfilling their ideals.

They will immediately find that they are already engaged in the execution of some of the common programme provided by the Mahamandal and they are not alone in this regard. Their work will gain extra vigor as soon as it will be found that similar work is going on elsewhere, that their work is not insignificant, but part of much bigger scheme with a momentum of its own.' Individuals ', interested in the Mahamandal's 'Aims & Objects' may also become associated with the Mahamandal by trying to form a 'New Unit' in his area under the Mahamandal or forming a group first, which may join the Mahamandal later.

He may also join any of the existing units of the Mahamandal or work directly with the Central Organization. Students and teachers of educational institutions may also join the Mahamandal in any one of the above methods or form a group in the institution or outside, which becomes a unit of the Mahamandal. New students may replace old members of such groups as the old students pass out.

THE SPIRIT OF WORK The common programme of work which the Mahamandal intends to follow, puts emphasis on the 'spirit' with which such activity are pursued. The items themselves are nothing new, but any work done in a particular spirit leaves a special mark on the character of the doer. ' Upon ages of struggle a character is built,' said Swamiji.

Thus we must start right now. ' The life is short and the vanities of the world are transient, but those only live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive.'

' Let us perfect the means; the end will take care of itself.' For the world can be good and pure, only if our lives are good and pure. Therefore, let us purify ourselves. Let us make ourselves perfect.' And that is possible only if we work in a spirit of sacrifice and service.

' Those that want to help man-kind must take their own pleasure and pain, name and fame, and all sorts of interests, and make a bundle of them and throw them into the sea," said Swamiji.

' Never think you can make the world better and happier.' It is our privilege to be allowed to be charitable, for only so can we grow'
